About competitive swimming
While humans have been swimming for millennia, the idea of swimming competitively is a surprisingly recent sport. Competitive swimming became popular in the 19th century in England and in 1828 the first indoor swimming pool St George's Baths was opened to the public. Initially, the swimming technique used competitively was very similar to the modern-day breaststroke. However, in 1844, two Native Americans competing in a competition in London introduced the, now widely-used, front crawl to an international audience. This swimming stroke is still widely regarded as the most powerful technique to use today. Swimming was a sport at the Summer Games in Athens in 1896, however, it wasn't until the games in 1952 that all four swimming techniques (front crawl, breast-stroke, backstroke and butterfly) were introduced.
