Suzanne Vega background
Suzanne Vega was born in California, however, she grew up in New York. Always interested in the arts, Suzanne Vega studied dance at High School and went on to study English literature at University. These two disciplines come across clearly in Suzanne Vega's music. A big inspiration for Suzanne Vega was Lou Reed and, after watching him perform in 1979, Vega started recording her own songs. It was not all plain sailing, however, and it would take six years before her demo tapes were accepted by a record company.
Suzanne Vega released her eponymously titled first album in 1985, however, it was the second Suzanne Vega album that established her as a major player in the business. Solitude Standing was released in 1987 and charted at number 11 on the US Billboard, number 2 in the UK and top of the charts in New Zealand and Sweden. Suzanne Vega music was praised by both fans and music critics for her simple and beautiful songwriting, a trait that still continues throughout her long career.
