Scotland Rugby Union – history and tradition
Along with Hampden Park and St Andrews, Murrayfield can claim to be one of the iconic homes of Scottish sport. The stadium has been the setting of countless exciting fixtures ever since the first international game, when Scotland beat England to claim their first-ever Grand Slam in the Five Nations Championship. Home matches come with a host of rituals: the emotionally charged singing of “Flower of Scotland”, jubilant choruses of “Five Hundred Miles” when a try is scored and, for many, a celebratory glass of something local in Edinburgh’s many historic pubs and bars.
For many fans, the Five Nations and Six Nations Championship has long been the highlight of the calendar, and a chance to see the team in action against their closest rivals. Scotland have won the title on many occasions, including the last ever Five Nations trophy in 1999, when Alan Tait’s performance sealed a memorable away win against France on the final day.
Thrilling encounters
Scotland’s most famous matches have not been without a touch of controversy – particularly in the 2015 World Cup. Captained by an inspirational Greig Laidlaw, in the form of his life, the Scots seemed to have clinched a place in the semi-finals through a late interception try by Mark Bennett. However, the game had one final twist, and a much-disputed offside penalty handed Australia a penalty and the win.
For Scotland, however, victory is never sweeter than when it’s achieved against England. In 1990, with both sides chasing the Five Nations title, Scotland won a close encounter with a brilliant team try. Scrum-half Gary Armstrong’s pass released Gavin Hastings, and the full-back just managed to gather and launch a kick ahead. The bounce of the ball favoured the on-rushing wing, Tony Stanger, whose try was enough to clinch the win.
