Scotland Rugby League background
Rugby league didn't come to Scotland when it first split from rugby union probably because of the popularity of rugby union and football. It didn't really take off until the early years of the 20th Century and even then it was always less popular than sports like shinty and ice hockey. The English rugby league teams attracted Scottish players when rugby was still an amateur sport as the rugby league teams in England were professional by the early 20th Century. This has all changed now with large crowds coming to watch the Scotland team and with the big teams from England coming to play to huge crowds of 60,000 in Scotland. Scotland Rugby League came into being when the Great British national team separated into the four nations of Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland in 2008. This is seen as an excellent chance to develop the sport further in Scotland and across the rest of the four nations.
Cheering for the Scottish Rugby League Bravehearts
Scotland has two teams to support: the Scotland team and the Scotland A team, known as the Bravehearts. This is because the Scotland team has historically contained mostly players from England who have Scottish parents and have trained and played for professional English teams. This is changing with the four Scottish teams, the Aberdeen Warriors, the Carluke Tigers, the Edinburgh Eagles and the Strathmore Silverbacks all doing well and drawing larger and larger crowds to their matches. The national Scotland Rugby League team rank highly and have high hopes for the future as they recently qualified for the Rugby League World Cup.
