Just when you think pop acts and computer music are taking over the entire music scene, bands like Polaris beg to stay away from laptops and drum machines to bring you their brand of pure and unadulterated rock. This band from Sydney delivers real, in-your-face metalcore music that’s supposed to be loud! Really loud! Polaris was formed in 2012 by mates Jamie Hails on vocals, Daniel Furnari on drums, Rick Schneider on rhythm guitar, Jake Steinhauser on vocals and bass, and Ryan Siew on lead guitar. The band’s style is derivative of the metalcore subgenre of rock as made popular in the mid 2000s. Hard, pounding drums synced with snarling bass lines are overlaid with multiple textures of guitars that are just unapologetic with excessive use of distortion. Topping off the rhythm section is the band’s signature vocal style, which is a combination of punk singing and metal growling. Having been playing in the local bar scene since they started, it was eventually in 2017 that the band gained significant recognition. The defining moment came when they got invited to play for 2017’s Unify Gathering, one of the biggest concert events in the Australian rock scene. Polaris easily wowed the crowd with their performance, landing them another booking for the much bigger Unify Gathering in 2018.
Polaris has released two extended play albums as an independent artist—‘Dichotomy’ in 2013 and ‘The Guilt and Grief’ in 2016. In 2017, the band got signed to record label Resist/SharpTone and released their first full-length album, ‘The Mortal Coil’. The album was met with highly positive acclaim from both fans and critics and even had a vinyl release. With many successful releases of singles, music videos, and mind-blowing live performances, Polaris has definitely become one of the most recognized and respected figures in metalcore, both in and outside of Australia.
