Pittsburgh Pirates History
The Pirates have a long and rich history. Founded in 1881, the franchise joined the National League in 1887 and played in the inaugural World Series in 1903 where they lost to the Boston Americans (now Boston Red Sox). They went on to win their first World Series in 1909 against the Detroit Tigers and have since gone on to win four further World Series (1925, 1960, 1971, 1979). The Pirates have also won nine National League Pennants and nine East Division titles. The Pittsburgh Pirates play their home games at PNC Park. The stadium, completed in 2001, offers breathtaking views of the Allegheny River and downtown Pittsburgh.
