Born Kimbra Lee Johnson in Hamilton, New Zealand, Kimbra started to learn the guitar while at school and by the time she was in her teens was performing live shows. At the age of 18, after catching the attention of record producer Mark Richardson, she signed with the independent label Forum 5 and moved to Melbourne, Australia. In 2011, Kimbra released her debut album Vows which went on to win or be nominated for numerous awards, including taking home the Album of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards. The album featured great Kimbra songs like "Settle Down" and "Cameo Lover".
2012 was when Kimbra went viral as her collaboration with Australian-Belgian singer Gotye went on to win two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, as well as numerous other accolades. She then returned in 2014 with her second album The Golden Echo, which contained a more experimental sound compared to her debut record. Songs like "90s Music" and "Miracle" impressed fans and critics and Kimbra soon embarked on a tour of Australia, New Zealand and further afield. Despite her young age, Kimbra has released three studio albums and her third album, released in 2018, is the culmination of years of work with stars of the music industry. "Top of the World" features work from Skrillex, and other new Kimbra songs from the album include "Everybody Knows", "Human" and "Version of Me".
