Origins of Escape to Margaritaville
The feel-good storyline of Escape to Margaritaville was co-authored Greg Garcia, an in-demand TV writer best known for creating the hit comedy series My Name Is Earl. He collaborated on the piece with Mike O'Malley, an actor and writer who has worked on Glee and Shameless. The show was directed by Tony-nominated Christopher Ashley, with costumes – resort-appropriate, of course – by Paul Tazewell, who collected a Tony for his contribution to the lavish period musical Hamilton. The score boasts a string of Jimmy Buffett favourites such as “Come Monday” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise” alongside new material written especially for the show. Capturing the laid-back, escapist spirit of Buffett's songs, the musical opened in La Jolla, California in 2017, with intense ticket demand leading to an extended run. It subsequently embarked on a tour of New Orleans, Houston and Chicago before heading to Broadway.
About Jimmy Buffett, the man behind Escape to Margaritaville
The creator of more than thirty albums, Jimmy Buffett began his career in the early '70s as a country music artist, but, after a visit to Key West, soon developed his own unique sound which he dubbed “Caribbean rock 'n' roll”. From this period date perennially popular tracks such as “Come Monday” and “Margaritaville,” whose catchy title would go on to inspire the 2017 musical as well as a chain of restaurants and a radio station. Nine of his albums have gone platinum, but he is perhaps most fondly regarded as a concert performer. The fun-loving, uptempo feeling of Buffett's music is matched by his cheery stage persona and colourful dress sense, qualities which are mirrored in the bright, lively look and sound of Escape to Margaritaville. During his long career, he has won a Country Music Award and played at the White House. He's also found time to write several books which have topped the New York Times Best Seller List in both the fiction and non-fiction categories.
