From Britain to the world
America was formed in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley, and Dan Peak. The three are all children of US Air Force servicemen who were stationed in the United Kingdom, where they met during their high school years. Bunnell, Beckley, and Peak started making music together in high school, writing original material and performing at the local scene. They named their trio America to clearly distinguish themselves as Americans, and not Britons trying to sound like Americans. After graduation in 1970, they quickly landed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records and were able to release their self-titled debut album in 1971. The album included the carrier single and band’s biggest hit, "A Horse with No Name". The release quickly propelled America to international stardom as the album easily achieved platinum certification and peaked 9th on US charts. In 1972, America released their second album, ‘Homecoming’. With hits songs like "Ventura Highway" and "Only in Your Heart", the album was yet another success and achieved gold certification, cementing the band firmly in the music industry.
Multiple recordings and awards
By 2019, America had already released more than 30 albums, which include studio albums, live performance captures, greatest hits compilations, bootlegs, and holiday specials. America is a recipient of multiple awards and nominations. In 1973, they won a Grammy for Best New Artist. They were also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Group the same year. In 2006, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and in 2012, received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. America’s musical style leans on folk rock. Their sound’s formula consists of acoustic guitar arrangements and vocal harmonies, delivered by catchy melodies at light to moderate tempos.
